Have you ever read a blog post, thinking to yourself, “Yeah! Exactly!” and then you keep reading and by the end of it you want to jump onto your computer and shout, “HELLS YES!” at the top of your lungs?

That was me, this morning, with A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing’s E-Volution post.

THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is what eReaders should be.

I hope publishing companies read this article and become evangelists for the eBook format. I hope READERS read this article and become evangelists for the eBook format.

“What E-Readers SHOULD Be”

HELLS YEAH!! That, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly what an e-reader should be like. And if they were like that, I would buy one immediately!

Travis wants one for Crimmas, and I’m tempted, but I also really like the feel of a paperback book in my hands. :)

I really like that idea a lot with some small reservations. I hate ads. I realize these people need to make money but I paid my money for the reader and I paid my money for the book – I’d like it to be ad-free. When I read, I want to hunker down and get lost in the book, not be constantly interrupted by an ad popping up or an extras tidbit. Save the extras for a separate menu or at the end like DVDs and Blu-Rays do. But, on the whole, this is a very cool idea and one I’d be interested in should something like this come to fruition. Until then, I’ll stay with my printed, worn, read-100-times paperbacks.

For me, with the ads, it would depend on HOW they’re done.

I think his proposal had ads in cheaper/free e-books, and ad-free books that were fully purchased.

A popup on my screen as I read, even if I’d purchased the book? UNCOOL.

I don’t get those (or commercials) when I buy a dvd, just when I get it free/cheap from cable. And that’s as it should be, imo.

Somehow, I had an image of myself sitting down in the middle of a park bench and reading a paperback, and suddenly Ronald McDonald running up to me from a distance, asking if I’ve tried his new bacon-doublecheeseburger for just $2 for a limited time. *laughs*

I certainly do like the idea of a more streamlined format for ebooks. I was only slightly put off by the notion that printed copies would be deemed obsolete. I’d really like to live in a world where digital and printed media coexisted.

That being said, I appreciate the availability of e-books as an aspiring author who really can’t be bothered to look for a trustworthy agent, and to find a publisher who’s willing to treat him seriously and not trying to sign him to some dummy contracts that net him absolutely no money. I’d rather be a self-made man, selling my own e-books from my own personal website, and supplementing that with a nice weekly blog containing serial fiction from the universes that I write from. Alas, I can only dream, right?

*laughs* I recommend you go take a look at the rest of the website linked. He’s a for-really-real published author, and he’s very (VERY) open about where he gets his money and why he thinks ebooks are the future.

They’re pretty friggin neat. The reason I’d shy away yet is because the eBOOK market is still in flux, not because of the eReaders.

I love the paper books as well, but I fell in love with the power and convenience of the eReader. I think if you got him one, you’d be wanting one almost immediately after.

@Krizzlybear Soon as Ronald disappears, an employee jumps out at you from the bushes and screams, “Do you want fries with that!?” Aaaaahhhh!

And I agree, there should be coexistence between printed and digital media. Lest you unfortunately walk by a strong magnet and *fizzle zap sizzle* goes the downloaded book *anguished cry to the heavens as people walk by you and look at you funny*.
