Inspiration

I read an absolutely fantastic post over on L’espirit d’escalier, entitled “In Which Your Hostess Gets Annoyed“. The moral of that particular post was “Writers Write”, but the author made a great point – that truism isn’t JUST for writers.

  • Writers Write.
  • Pilots Fly.
  • Knitters Knit.
  • Pianists Play.
  • Artists Draw.
  • Programmers Program.
  • Video Game Designers Design Video Games.
  • [Nouns] [Verb].

Are you a [Noun]? THEN [Verb]!

Don’t talk about [Verb]ing. Don’t think about [Verb]ing. Don’t complain about how hard it is to [Verb]. Stop thinking that you’ll [Verb] someday, or procrastinate because you can always [Verb] later.

What are you waiting for? Do you have dreams of becoming a programmer, or a writer, or an artist, a pianist, a [Noun]?

Say you SUCK at those things. Say you’ve never even tried, because you know you’re no good at it.

SO WHAT?

You think everyone is BORN fantastic at what they do? Heck, no! It’s WORK. It takes ACTION. It takes [Verb]!

Take piano lessons. Practice.

Watch “how to knit” videos on YouTube. Practice.

Sketch. Play. Write. Practice.

SUCK.

Work through the suckage. Everyone sucks. With practice, you can suck less. Gain the skills to become the [Noun] you’ve always wanted to be.

In order to be a [Noun], you HAVE TO [Verb].

Take action.

My sentiments are slightly less platonic than kes’s, but only slightly. I love you too XD

And that suck banner is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself.

*giggles* By the end of it, I am using my mental R. Lee. Ermey voice. ‘Listen up, you maggots!’ (I DO IT WITH LOVE!)

I am SUPER happy with all the “quotes” I commissioned from my friend. And I love that I found an excuse to use one!

It’s a slight aside, but Gladwell’s book Outliers focuses on how most of the extremely successful people in a given field had an advantage that gave them a head start… and in his estimation, it’s about 10,000 hours of practice at the thing you want to be good at. Bill Gates had access to a mainframe terminal in middle school; Tiger Woods played golf since he was 4; etc.

    @Nicolas
I like that the only ‘advantage’ the examples had was practice.

Instead of “how can I possibly be as good at golf as Tiger Woods” followed by throwing one’s golf clubs in the corner, I should like to hear “Ha! I shall practice even MORE than he did, and meet him on a more advantageous playing field!”

    ^_^

I wonder how often a “skill” in something is a real inherent skill, or how often it can be traced back to being a very small child and having someone tell you that you were good at something, which then led you to wanting to do it more often.

I had intentions of ironing that (Full of Suck: APOI) on a shirt, my wife (being the most sensible woman and more alert at times than I) brought me up to date on what would happen should I wear that shirt out… I’ll just print it out and keep it near my desk at home. Disaster avoided >.>

What would I do without a great woman to keep me on track I wonder?
